The thousand steps
You are apprentices one step from becoming ninja. One road remains: the thousand steps to the temple at the mountain’s peak, and the trials that wait on each of them.
Pass the three trials without a single failure. Only then may you face Sensei Shinji, in the last trial. The night is short, and the mountain does not forgive.
On the final step, someone has scratched a single line – my hand. I climbed here too, once. What I found at the top won’t fit in a line.
Pass the trials. Face the Sensei. Reach the peak before dawn.
